England captain Joe Root has been impressed by the maturity shown by under-fire opener Keaton Jennings ahead of the fourth Test against South Africa at Old Trafford. Jennings place is under scrutiny following a difficult series against the Proteas although he seems to have earned a stay of execution with a gritty 48 in the second innings of England s 239-run win at The Oval. England s recent batch of final Test defeats are a bad omen Read more Root hinted Jennings would retain his place on Friday morning as the skipper revealed his admiration for how Jennings who has played only five Tests goes about his business. Root said: He s a very level-headed guy he s got a very strong character and throughout he s been very much the same in the way he s approached his training and in each game as well. It s great to see someone so light of experience be very mature and go about it in the right way. The way he played in that second innings was extremely great to see I m pleased that he s been able to get a score and hopefully that ll lead into some more runs this week. Jennings made a century in his debut Test innings in India last winter but is averaging only 15.33 after three matches against South Africa with his technique criticised in some quarters. And Root acknowledged it is increasingly difficult to become established in Test cricket. He added: It s tough and that s why it s called Test cricket it can be a very hard thing to break into. You come from county cricket where there s not a huge amount of exposure to the media and external scrutiny - and you have to get your head around it pretty quickly. It is a test of character it s a test of skill. Heavy rain in Manchester has hampered preparations for the final Test into which England take a 2-1 lead with heat lamps being used to keep the pitch dry. Moeen Ali: If it wasn t for cricket I don t know what I d be doing now Read more A passing shower on Thursday morning left the outfield waterlogged although Root insists it is not a concern for his side as he looks to wrap up victory in his first series leading England. Root said: There s been a lot of chat about the outfield and the surface and the weather around but most importantly all we need to focus on is making sure we look to win this game. However the inclement weather has denied Root and England the opportunity to assess the pitch properly so he refused to divulge whether they would stick with a winning formula. He added: It the wicket was under-prepared and a lot can change in the next 24 hours so we ll make a judgement on the side tomorrow. The one thing you would expect every player to have (is) guts - determination the desire to improve and get better he said. We thought in the second innings at The Oval he showed real application (scoring 48) and he really applied himself and got stuck in. Again today he started showing glimpses of someone who has made adjustments. But Farbrace noted that Jennings has not had the time to go away and work on areas of his game that may need improvement. There is a lot said about players being found out at international level he found out a lot about himself in these last few test matches and there are areas of his game that he would want to work on but there hasn t been time to take a step back and perhaps work at things he would like to work on and enable him to be more successful in test cricket he added. Jennings made 17 on the opening day of the fourth and final test at Old Trafford before an unconvincing stroke edged a simple catch to keeper Quinton de Kock off Duanne Olivier. Farbrace though says the batsman has the right attitude to survive his difficulties. The one thing we would judge him on is his character his personality to cope with the last few weeks. I have to say he is a very honest young man who works extremely hard at his game and given the chance to get through this spell and work at his game I think he will make a success at international cricket. (Reporting by Simon Evans; editing by Julian Shea and Pritha Sarkar) The timing may have been purely coincidental but as Keaton Jennings trudged back to the dressing room stairs at Old Trafford on Friday with 17 to his name and Haseeb Hameed began a net session with the England coaches it was hard not to ponder whether the pair will be trading places come the first Test with West Indies in a fortnight s time. Jennings is the latest in a long line of England openers to find their summer turn into something of a saga and still has one innings remaining in this match at least. But since earning his chance last winter through Hameed s broken hand and starring on debut with a century in Mumbai the theme of this first home season has not been one of permanence. England fail to capitalise on starts and lose Ben Stokes late in the day Read more Here in Manchester the 25-year-old left-hander with the sunny disposition appeared to have caught a break. Vernon Philander whose nibbling style of seam bowling has had his number three times to date was out of the match with back spasms. South Africa still cut their seamers by one. Joe Root won the toss. A chance was there to be taken. It was always going to require some fortune against the new ball under early overcast skies as demonstrated by Alastair Cook playing and missing three times in the first over. And Jennings indeed got a reprieve on four with Kagiso Rabada failing to hold a diving caught and bowled in the second over that the curiously absent short leg would have gobbled up. But just when Jennings had started to cut loose a touch with a couple of crunched fours through the covers the seamer called up by the tourists Duanne Olivier gave his best recreation of Philander s past exploits by teasing an edge from a tentative defensive shot that Quinton de Kock gleefully held off his old school chum. He s found out a lot about himself in these last few Tests there s absolutely no doubt the England assistant coach Paul Farbrace said after stumps. And there s areas of his game he would want to work on but there hasn t been time to perhaps take a step back and address a couple things that would enable him to be more successful in Test cricket. He s a very honest young man who works extremely hard on his game and given the chance to get through this spell he can make a success of international cricket. When you have someone who is honest and driven you want to stick with them. But as Jennings departed with a sense of deja vu and an average of 15.57 this series albeit with a slightly more philosophical outlook than the bat-slamming antics of Dawid Malan witnessed on the stroke of tea Hameed was just beginning his drills with the England batting coach Mark Ramprakash and a small audience of cheery supporters for company. It is hard to work out how much of a stalking horse Hameed is to Jennings at present not least with Surrey s in-form Mark Stoneman having twice come close to selection this summer. Hameed s spell taking throw-downs from Ramprakash one that saw his middle stump pegged back early in the piece and prompted some lighthearted ribbing from the onlookers was in part due to location but there is little doubt the England management view the 20-year-old as their best long-term bet for a position that has become a five-year revolving door. Was his presence at Old Trafford fair on the incumbent playing for his place? Farbrace replied: It s just another opportunity to keep Hameed in the fold and make him realise he s very much part of the future of the England cricket team. We want him to score runs and hopefully push to get back into the team at some point. If you re in the England team there should always be someone knocking on the door for you place. So whether they re here at the ground or whether they re doing it in county cricket they re there. That s the idea you bring people along you want them to be part of it and if it puts pressure on all well and good. Farbrace said the selectors will be keeping an eye on Lancashire s game against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl from Sunday as the County Championship briefly pops up its head in the mid-summer Twenty20 block and a sizeable score for Hameed would be timely for a batsman whose demonstration of talent and character in India was followed by a string of low returns on his return to domestic action. But it would also see England enter the same perilous territory that handed Gary Ballance a return last season on the back of one century rather than a string of consistent returns and expose an otherwise out of form player to international attacks. Hameed is an asset they will be even more wary of damaging. West Indies however may be considered a soft re-entry for Hameed even with the slight element of the unknown that comes with the first Test being a day-night affair. If Jennings bounces back in the second innings a call to his Durham captain and some-time drinker in the last chance saloon Paul Collingwood might be an idea then it will all become moot. South Africa may be without Philander this Test but their bowlers who are one light in number with the extra batsman preferred put in a shift. Keshav Maharaj may have largely escaped the headlines this series but played a crucial hand for Faf du Plessis by stopping Cook in his tracks for 46 and ending the day with one for a thrifty 54 from his 29 overs. The Proteas do not have a rich heritage of spin bowlers. Hugh Tayfield is their lead protagonist with 170 wickets in the 1950s while since readmission only three men Paul Adams Paul Harris and Nicky Boje have ventured into triple-figures. Maharaj 27 has 41 victims from 11 Tests and the simple repeatable action that delivers such unwavering accuracy makes him a fair bet to one day top the lot. Jadeja bowls the last over of Day 3 with nightwatchman Pushpakumara remaining defensive and seeing it off. Second maiden for Jadeja as the Sri Lankans finish the day at 209/2. Day 2 report: India rode on a strong batting performance and some superb bowling by star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin to consolidate their advantage on the second day of the second cricket Test against Sri Lanka here on Friday. India captain Virat Kohli decided on declaration during the last session of the day after the visitors had piled on a mammoth total of 622/9 in their first innings. Ashwin made good use of the considerable turn being offered by the pitch to remove Lankan openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Upul Tharanga as the hosts posted 50/2 in their first innings at stumps. India now have a lead of 572 runs. Dinesh Chandimal and Virat Kohli captain of Sri Lanka and India respectively. AP Kusal Mendis (16 batting) and Dinesh Chandimal (8 batting) were at the crease when the umpires decided to call it a day at the Sinhalese Sports Club. Ashwin registered figures of 2/38. Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja and fast bowler Mohammed Shami also bowled well although both did not manage a wicket. Earlier the Indians rode on half-centuries from Jadeja Wriddhiman Saha and Ashwin to post a big total. Jadeja remained unbeaten on a quick 70 runs off 85 balls which included four boundaries and three sixes. Saha and Ashwin made 67 and 54 respectively. Off-spinner Rangana Herath was the most successful among the Sri Lankan bowlers with figures of 4/154. Left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara returned with 2/156 while Karunaratne and Dilruwan Perera bagged a wicket each. Resuming the day at 344/3 India lost Cheteshwar Pujara (133) in the second over of the day trapped in front by part-timer Dimuth Karunaratne before Ajinkya Rahane (132) and Ashwin consolidated the innings with a 63-run fifth-wicket stand. Pujara looked good during his brief stay on the second morning fetching a boundary off Karunaratne but the next delivery ended his 232-ball vigil. The Saurashtra right-hander who had by now added 217 runs with Rahane was hit on his thighs by a back of a length delivery from Karunaratne resulting in loud appeals from the hosts. The on-field umpire however did not budge and the home side immediately asked for a referral which got them the prized wicket. The fall of Pujara brought in the dependable Ashwin who started briskly striking two boundaries off Rangana Herath and Karunaratne before slowing down a bit. The right-handed duo of Ashwin and Rahane continued to frustrate the Sri Lankans stealing the odd boundaries and rotating the strike at a good rate to raise their 50-run stand in no time. In his attempt to accelerate the scoring rate after India crossed the psychologically important 400-run mark Rahane perished to debutant left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara smartly stumped by Niroshan Dickwella after facing 222 balls and sending the ball 14 times to the fence. Rahane s dismissal brought a sigh of relief to the Sri Lankan camp as wicketkeeper-batsman Saha and Ashwin safely guided India to 442/5 at the lunch break. The Sri Lankans started the post-lunch session on a promising note when Ashwin was bowled by Herath shortly after completing his half-century. Ashwin who notched up the 11th half-century of his Test career faced 92 balls hitting five boundaries and a six. Hardik Pandya then scored 20 runs off as many deliveries before he mistimed his shot while trying to smash a Pushpakumara delivery out of the park only to see Angelo Mathews latch onto the skier at long-off. Jadeja joined Saha in the middle and the duo added 72 runs between them to pile more pressure on the hosts. Saha was batting comfortably but was stumped when he stepped out to a flighted delivery from Herath. His patient innings of 134 balls included four boundaries and a six. Saha s departure prompted Jadeja to up the ante and the Gujarat all-rounder brought up his half-century in style flicking a Herath delivery off his pads for a boundary. Shami played a brief power-packed knock at the other end smashing 19 runs off eight deliveries. He hit Herath into the stands off two consecutive deliveries before offering a skier to Tharanga at deep mid-wicket while going for a hat-trick of sixes. Jadeja continued with his aggressive batting stepping out to smash Herath for another six with Umesh Yadav also joining the party with a boundary off Dilruwan Perera. With inputs from IANS With substantial rather than decisive contributions from the old guard Alastair Cook Joe Root and Ben Stokes (yes he can just about be included in this category now) England tiptoed towards a serviceable total in the final Test of the series but no more than that. This trio scored 46 52 and 58 respectively as England finished an absorbing day on 260 for six. Yet South Africa were able to leave the field with a smile. They were boosted by the late dismissal of Stokes just before the close and the knowledge that they had hung in there with a depleted attack. Several times England were on the verge of domination whereupon another wicket fell. The simple fact is that this England team is far from formidable at present since three of their top five are searching with varying degrees of success for ways to leap over the initial barriers that Test cricket presents. The obstacles have several threads: better bowlers greater scrutiny which leads to a far more pressurised environment than is experienced in domestic cricket. The newcomers all made a start supposedly the hard bit but they could muster only 64 runs between them. England v South Africa: fourth Test day one as it happened Read more Dawid Malan demonstrated his frustration most obviously by banging his bat into the turf just after he edged Morne Morkel s last ball before tea to second slip. Tom https://secure.followus.com/signup/step/theme  Westley the most impressive of the new boys remained self-composed after nicking a fine delivery from Kagiso Rabada. Likewise Keaton Jennings departed decorously when dismissed by Duanne Olivier just before noon but he must have been crestfallen. One day the cameraman who pokes his implement at the departing batsman s nose while invading his personal space will get an almighty thump and not much sympathy. Of this trio Jennings must be the most desperate for runs in the second innings to keep his place in the team. Seldom has there been such a gulf within a Test batting lineup between the newcomers and the established; in fact it is unusual to have so many novices feeling their way simultaneously. Cook and Root albeit with their contrasting virtues are among the best players of their generation. Stokes may well have the capacity to join that elite. But Jennings Westley and Malan are just dipping their toes in the water. Early on it was tricky whether the batsman had 144 matches under his belt like Cook or six like Jennings. The dark brown hue of the pitch suggested moisture though not enough to deter Root from choosing to bat and there was movement for South Africa s pace bowlers. Unfortunately for Faf du Plessis these did not include Vernon Philander infuriatingly suffering from back spasms a condition which also afflicted Chris Morris. Nonetheless Morkel and Rabada are not a bad pairing and in his first over alone Morkel beat Cook s bat three times. There was sufficient lateral movement to make batting a trial. On four Jennings pushed forward and a bat/pad catch looped enticingly in the air. A forward short leg could have strolled to his right to take the catch but there was no one there. Instead Rabada bounded forward and dived but the ball bobbled out of his hands. Jennings hit two crisp off-side boundaries but could not make much of this escape. On 17 a straightforward edge from a stiff defensive stroke ended up in Quinton de Kock s gloves. Now the Essex boys battled away; the bowlers maintained a full length so they were seldom on the pull. Westley left the ball expertly and in the last half an hour before lunch Du Plessis as if sensing a long day ahead employed both Keshav Maharaj his fast-improving spinner and Theunis de Bruyn the dibbly-dobbliest of seamers. For England it was a bonus to lose just one wicket in the session. South Africa contrived three wickets in the afternoon. Maharaj who would occupy the Brian Statham End all afternoon and most of the evening had Cook caught behind for 46. After all that graft in taxing conditions this must have been an exasperating dismissal. In the next over Westley edged and De Kock diving to his right held a brilliant one-handed catch. Next into the unforgiving examination chamber came Malan. While Root proceeded watchfully by his standards but seldom missed out on a scoring opportunity progress was painfully slow for Malan as he sought to assert himself at this level. There was a leg glance and a neat cover drive to the boundary but no stepping up from the foothills of Test cricket. After tea Root reached a landmark even though he scored only 52: he became the fifth fastest Englishman to 5 000 Test runs. This modest statistic is a sound indicator of Root s quality as a Test batsman since the other four (with the fastest to 5 000 first) are as follows: Jack Hobbs Wally Hammond Ken Barrington and Len Hutton. It is also a sign of a damned good player when there is frustration that he seems to get out too frequently between 50 and 100. However Root s was a poor dismissal; he was lbw to Olivier a bowler who declines to tuck his shirt in (how many of the great ones have done that?). The ball was full and straight and Root tried to whip it to the leg side. But he missed it. In his disgust he opted for an ill-conceived futile review. Jonny Bairstow almost followed soon after. On four he edged a ball on to his pad off Maharaj and it ended up in Dean Elgar s hands at slip (after an initial appeal for lbw). It was one of those that looked out to the naked eye but once it was referred to the third umpire the doubts surfaced as to whether it was a clean catch. Then Bairstow added 65 alongside Stokes who may have been contemplating some mayhem in the morning when his stumps were splattered by a brilliant Rabada yorker in the penultimate over. Curiously Toby Roland-Jones came in as a nightwatchman so Moeen will be batting nine one of the few batting positions he has yet to experience. India skipper Virat Kohli on Wednesday ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka confirmed that opener KL Rahul is all set to be part of the playing eleven in Colombo. Rahul missed the first Test due to viral fever and was hospitalized for a couple of days. Shikhar Dhawan who had replaced him in the squad hit a match-winning 190 in the first innings. During the pre-match press conference Kohli said that Rahul has been India s established opener and either Dhawan or Abhinav Mukund will have to make way for him. Reiterating his point Kohli further added that Rahul had played well in the practice session and looked really solid. KL Rahul has been our established opener. I feel one of the openers (Dhawan or Mukund) will have to make way for him because what he (Rahul) has done in the past two years for us has been very solid. He deserves to come back and start fresh in Test cricket again Kohli said. We have a team meeting later on after practice and we ll be able to clarify that then. But yes according to me KL (Rahul) will definitely come back into the eleven confirmed the skipper. In the previous Test series against Australia Rahul notched up 393 runs with six half-centuries in four Tests. Even in the warm-up game in Colombo against Sri Lanka Board President s XI Rahul scored 59 runs. It is very important to make Rahul feel at ease specifically because he played the practice game as well and he looked really solid. He has batted really well in the last couple of seasons for us. It is very important for us to make him feel that this is his spot. And it won t be changed because of unfortunate events that happen outside of the playing field or the injuries that you can t control Kohli reasoned. Kohli is confident that Rahul will come out stronger. That phase you have to come back you need to get stronger. He has really stuck it out in that phase. It s been hard for him we all know that because he was batting so well and then he was out because of this. It is very important to make him feel secure and he deserves it because he has given us those big performances when the team has required the most. He is a guy that needs to be backed and we as a team as management and me as captain all back him 100 per cent he added. Asked about who among Dhawan or Mukund will make way for KL Rahul Kohli said I feel in a situation like this you need to sit down and think which player has had more impact on the game. Who has been able to sort of make that difference in the game straightaway? It all depends on who has had a better game to be honest. Dhawan s scored 190 off 168 balls that won him the man-of-the-match award in the first Test against Sri Lanka. Kohli admitted that the margin in terms of quality between two international players is very little. It s a pretty thin line. It is a very small margin but unfortunately that is how the sport goes sometimes and things happen in a team environment. In the dynamics of a team the guy who sits out will understand the reasons behind it said the skipper. However Kohli was quick to point out that both Mukund and Dhawan have backing from the team. Not to say that those people are not being backed but it s whatever the best combination we as a team feel we should take on the field we back that and we take that call. It is up to the individuals who are involved in that decision to understand it is for the best interest of the team. Guys are professional enough to know that but I think in a scenario like this you will always think of a guy who has had more impact on setting up the game or winning the game for the team he added. Meanwhile no other changes are expected for India as the wicket laid out at the SSC is pretty hard with a fine sprinkling of green. It is not quite similar to the one in 2015 which was a proper green-top pitch and assisted pacers throughout the game. I had a look at the wicket yesterday I haven t seen it today yet. It looked pretty nice and hard underneath with good covering of grass. The last time around as well we thought it was a great wicket for Test cricket Kohli observed. The Indian captain assessed it as a result-oriented wicket. It is a wicket that you will get a result for sure. That excites us it s something that we look forward to as a team and this is the kind of wicket that we always like to play on where we have a chance to make an impact on the game throughout said Kohli. Kohli urged his batsmen to show more composure once there is a partnership going. One thing we need to be aware of is when there is a partnership or some thing happening then we need to have more composure and more discipline at times. But as I said there always will be a few scratches here and there when you are playing Test cricket after March. Watch it right here. Continue reading the primary tale It is hard to overstate the importance of the instant. For billions of years lifestyles on Earth has been fashioned slowly and incrementally through dumb evolution. But in studies this week scientists showed how that might alternate. With superior genetic engineering gear a US-Korean group mended dangerous heart ailment mutations in human embryos for the primary time. The feat paves the way for radical new remedies and for humans to take control in their genetic destiny. The potential to edit human genomes may additionally one day remodel people s lives but in breaking new floor it would cross a line that has long been controversial. Today many countries restrict the advent of genetically altered human beings despite the fact that the manner would spare them a devastating and lifestyles-shortening ailment. The caution comes from the reality that adjustments to an embryo s DNA have an effect on not handiest the child in question however their sperm or eggs. When the time came they would skip on the changes and any harmful aspect-outcomes the process may additionally motive to their youngsters and future generations. The danger of inflicting unintended harm to unknown numbers of human beings is simplest one situation. Inevitably the capacity to tweak the DNA of unborn kids raises the possibility of fashion designer babies. There are broader fears too: that removing positive mutations may want to threaten humans s identities or http://gdnther.doattend.com/ even the sense of what it way to be human. If we trade our DNA  forever are we still human? I think we are lots extra than our DNA but humans have exclusive solutions to that question stated Christine Watson professor of cell and most cancers biology at Cambridge. The work by the United States and Korean crew is a milestone. Around the sector a handful of organizations are exploring a way to correct defective genes in human embryos in the desire of stopping terrible sicknesses from being passed on. Until now all have arise against the same brick walls. Having treated embryos for dangerous mutations assessments reveal that a few still linger leading to what are called mosaic embryos. Another commonplace glitch is that the very method supposed to fix horrific mutations causes sparkling ones some other place generating so-referred to as off-target outcomes and posing a cancer chance. The researchers overcame each those hurdles by appearing the modifying manner whilst the sperm and egg first met. The Guardian view on human genome enhancing: find replace and  remedy more The massive leap forward is they managed to correct the mutation have a totally low stage of mosaic embryos and seemingly no off-target outcomes said Watson. That for me is the big safety problem: that by means of correcting one mutation you introduce another and who knows what that could do. At face price the studies has enormous capability. More than 10 000 inherited diseases might be averted by correcting harmful mutations. Many of them are critical along with Tay-Sachs cystic fibrosis Huntington s disease and breast most cancers related to mutations within the BRCA gene. But in fact very few humans could benefit if current bans on genetically altered embryos had been suddenly lifted. In the majority of cases those who understand they convey a heritable disorder and who want genetically-related youngsters can undergo IVF and feature their embryos screened for dangerous mutations. Fertility medical doctors do https://www.edutopia.org/users/gdnther that every day and select simplest the healthiest embryos to implant in potential moms. But as Tom Shakespeare professor of disability research at Norwich Medical School factors out it doesn t assist dad and mom dramatically. As of now what s been accomplished is not any better than what we have already got. If I actually have a 50% threat of passing on my circumstance after which I have a complicated procedure that lowers that to twenty-eight% it hasn t solved the problem he said. There are situations wherein embryo screening cannot work and in which genome editing may want to help. The traditional instance is a person who incorporates copies of the mutation that causes Huntington s ailment. Every embryo constituted of their sperm or eggs would deliver at the least one sickness gene sufficient for the situation to take hold. In this example genome modifying may want to help through overwriting the Huntington s mutation with a practical copy of the gene. But the quantity of folks who deliver Huntington s genes is vanishingly uncommon measured in the dozens international. We are definitely speaking about a very very small set of humans and it s clean to forget about that because the science is so interesting stated Karen Yeung director of the Centre for Technology Ethics and Law in Society at King s College London and chair of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics Working Group on Genome Editing and Human Reproduction. One of the problems ethicists nonetheless grapple with is the way to weigh up the common choice for humans to have genetically-associated children in place of undertake or truely have no kids. A more effective way to lessen genetic disease will be a countrywide genetic testing software that identifies folks who are vendors of dangerous genes and susceptible to passing them on. I think the best manner we ll make development with genome editing is whilst sequencing is cheap sufficient that every infant could have their genome sequenced at birth said Watson. It s going to be reasonably-priced sufficient to do that quickly however will humans assume it s perfect?
